Dr. Dero Downing Environmental Stewardship Award
Dr. Dero G. Downing, president emeritus of WKU, was the inaugural recipient of the award named in his honor at Earth Day 2010 festivities on WKU's campus. Dr. Downing was chosen because he was one of the first individuals in a prominent position to lead by example in keeping the community, and the Earth, clean for others. Dr. Downing's son, Alex, has fond memories of Sunday afternoons spent with the family - picking up litter on the Western campus. Dr. Downing's actions were considered by some to be perhap eccentric for the times, but his example served to raise the bar for all of us, particularly new students who learned of his reputation for keeping the campus clean. As a consequence, many students have made his example a part of their core being.
The award is sponsored by Warren County and its divisions for Stormwater Management and Environmental Planning & Assistance, which or part of the Office of Stormwater Management.
Please see a copy of Dr. Downing's certificate and a nomination form for the 2011 award in the file download section.
